More affordable restaurants take the spotlight this year in the second edition of the Bib Gourmand awards in the 2017 MICHELIN guide Singapore released this morning.
Among them are names such as French restaurant Bar-Roque Grill and the popular Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant by chef Teppei Yamashita, who also owns Teppei restaurant and Hanare along Tanjong Pagar road.
While last year's Bib Gourmand list had a strong showing of hawkers cooking up a variety of local dishes such as chicken rice to laksa and even the humble curry puff, this year's list puts the spotlight on six new restaurants serving up delicious food at affordable prices. 18 of the 38 eateries this year are restaurants, with a diversity of cuisine types including French, Indian, Japanese and Peranakan food being represented. The Bib Gourmand list recognises restaurants and street food establishments offering quality cuisines at a maximum price of S$45.
The high number of Bib Gourmand awarded eateries this year is also a nod towards Singapore's diverse and dynamic food scene. Here's a perspective: 38 Bib Gourmand eateries spread out across our island means it is possible for one to dine at a high-quality awarded establishment every 19sq-kilometres (that's 1.5 times the size of Changi airport).

The Blue Ginger: Another new restaurant awarded with a Bib Gourmand
Among the hawker options this year are new entrants Ah Er Soup in ABC Brickworks Market, which serves Cantonese-style soups, and New Lucky Claypot Rice at Holland Drive Market and Food Centre. They join popular favourites that remain on the list, such as Tiong Bahru Hainanese Chicken Rice in Tiong Bahru Market and J2 Crispy Curry Puff in Amoy Street Market.
