5 Michelin-Recommended Thai Restaurants In Hong Kong

Here's where to get your fix of this punchy cuisine.

Bangkok has been buzzing since Michelin announced its intentions to launch its first Thai guide later this year. But eager gourmands right here in Hong Kong won’t have to travel far to have a taste of the restaurants touched by the magic of the Michelin inspectors. In fact, there are five existing Thai restaurants recommended in the 2017 Hong Kong Macau MICHELIN Guide – two of which are bestowed with the Bib Gourmand accolade. Read on to find out what our inspectors have to say.
Thai Chiu (Sham Shui Po)
Hainanese chicken; tom yum kung with seafood; fried egg with herbs and the various different styles of curry are just some of the highlights from an extensive menu prepared by native Thai chefs at this simple little restaurant. It’s made up of two modest dining rooms, both decorated in bright green and yellow, with plastic tables and small stools. Simple it may be, but the food is good and the prices are competitive. 101-103 Fuk Wing Street, Sham Shui Po.
Café Siam
For lovers of Thai food, Café Siam has been a reassuring presence in Central for over 15 years, albeit at two different addresses. It now occupies two floors of a building in LKF and keeps its regulars happy with satisfying and aromatic curries, mouth-wateringly fresh salads like Som Tam, hotpots and dishes like spicy stir-fried prawns. Local office workers crowd in at lunchtime for the Pad Thai and Khao Pad. 2-3F, 21 D'Aguilar Street, Central.
May’s Sawaddee Thailand
On the ground floor of a residential building in the heart of Sai Kung sits this long, narrow, simply decorated but comfortable Thai restaurant. From the hospitable, all-female service team comes an extensive menu of authentic Thai dishes, whose highlights include yellow chicken curry in bread, fried crab with curry, Tom Yum Goong, and fried rice with minced meat and herbs, all made using fresh, good quality ingredients. 24 Man Nin Street, Sai Kung.
Moon Thai (Sheung Wan)
Secreted on the second floor of the Holiday Inn Express, Moon Thai is led by an experienced Thai chef who insists on using the freshest ingredients. Seafood dishes are the ones that stand out and he is known particularly for his own creation of fried crab with tom yum paste. Get in the mood by beginning your evening with a lemongrass martini. There is also an Indian chef in the kitchen preparing some Indian specialities. 2F, Holiday Inn Express, 83 Jervois Road, Sheung Wan.
Chili Club
It’s fair to say that customers aren’t attracted to Chili Club by its looks. However, if you’re strolling along Lockhart Road in search of sustenance you’ll find yourself drawn inexorably into this Thai restaurant by the enticing aromas emanating from it. Proving further than one shouldn’t judge by appearance, the kitchen is less preoccupied with presentation and instead focuses on delivering authentic and very satisfying flavours. 1F, 88 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai.
